Xiaomi Becomes Fastest Growing Smartphone in 2024

Xiaomi has emerged as the fastest-growing smartphone brand in 2024, outperforming market giants Samsung and Apple. This rise is particularly impressive given Xiaomi’s lack of presence in the United States, one of the world’s largest smartphone markets. Instead, the company strategically concentrated on markets across Europe, Asia, and Africa, where its efforts have clearly paid off.

Market Growth After a Tough Year

The global smartphone market showed signs of recovery in 2024, growing by 4% year-on-year, according to preliminary data from Counterpoint Research. This comes as a welcome relief after 2023, which saw the lowest phone sales in a decade. Xiaomi capitalized on this market rebound, increasing its global market share by one percentage point on a year-on-year basis, an achievement driven by its portfolio realignment, focus on premium devices, and aggressive marketing campaigns.

Xiaomi’s Winning Strategy

Xiaomi’s decision to realign its smartphone portfolio and venture into higher-end devices played a crucial role in its success. The company shifted its focus to delivering better-performing premium phones, appealing to tech-savvy customers in competitive regions. Alongside this strategy, Xiaomi implemented innovative marketing efforts to further solidify its growth, all without relying on the US market.

Samsung and Apple Maintain Leadership—With Challenges

Despite Xiaomi’s surge, Samsung maintained its position as the global leader with a 19% market share. The brand’s Galaxy S24 and Galaxy A product lines contributed to its stable performance in 2024. Apple secured the second spot with an 18% market share, though it faced some challenges. The iPhone 16 series received mixed reactions in global markets, and the limited rollout of Apple Intelligence diminished enthusiasm in core regions like the US.

Both Samsung and Apple experienced marginal declines in market share, with each brand seeing a slight one-percentage-point drop. While they remain on top, these slight dips underscore the growing competition in the global smartphone market.

The Future of Smartphones and Generative AI

Looking ahead, advancements in Generative AI (GenAI) are set to transform the smartphone experience. Counterpoint Research predicts that by 2028, nine out of ten smartphones priced above $250 will feature GenAI capabilities. This projection signals a shift toward more intelligent and capable devices, particularly in the mid-range segment.

With these trends shaping the future of the smartphone industry, companies like Xiaomi, Samsung, and Apple will continue to compete fiercely, each aiming to adapt and innovate. Xiaomi’s remarkable growth in 2024 highlights how strategic realignments and bold expansions can shake up even the most well-established markets.
