iPhone Duo 2 Prototype Leaked: Major Upgrade to Triple Rear Camera
Fast Technology reported that a blogger recently posted photos of what appears to be a prototype of the iPhone Duo 2 on social media, attracting considerable attention. Judging from the images, the biggest change on the back of the new phone is the upgrade of the camera module from a dual-camera setup to a triple-camera system, with the newly added lens most likely being a telephoto lens.
As Apple’s first foldable screen phone, the iPhone Duo made significant trade-offs in imaging and unlocking methods. To control thickness, it only features a main camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens, lacking a dedicated telephoto lens, with telephoto shots relying on cropping from the main camera; it also eliminated Face ID, replacing it with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Based on information from the prototype, the iPhone Duo 2’s upgrade strategy is straightforward: prioritizing addressing the most noticeable gap in imaging capabilities. With the addition of a telephoto lens to the triple-camera setup, long-distance shooting, portrait composition, and zoom image quality are expected to improve significantly, bringing the imaging experience closer to that of the Pro series.
Another issue worth noting is whether Face ID will make a comeback. The initial removal of Face ID was mainly due to space constraints. If the second generation makes optimizations to the hinge and internal stacking, Apple may re-evaluate the unlocking solution.
It’s important to emphasize that a prototype is not the same as the final production model. Apple tests various solutions during the engineering verification phase, and the number of cameras and even the overall design may be adjusted. However, the appearance of a triple-camera prototype at least indicates that Apple has realized that the compromises made in the initial model’s imaging capabilities need to be corrected.
For the foldable iPhone, the first generation completed the form factor implementation and ecosystem verification, while the second generation’s task is to make up for the shortcomings and improve maturity. The addition of the telephoto lens is a positive sign.
